ノーベル物理学賞

今年もこの季節がやってきたノーベル賞。

物理学賞で日本人が３名同時受賞です。これはすごいです。

素粒子物理学の基礎原理を定式化した３人だそうです。

物質質量がなぜ生まれるかという問いを理論的に説明したことに対しての受賞だそうで、詳しくはよくわかりませんが、いろんな情報を読んでみて何となく理解できました。

南部博士は頭の片隅で量子物理学中の南部理論としてあったような記憶がかすかにありますが・・・・。

何年か前で読んだ新聞で、素粒子に質量があることを実験で証明したという記事がありましたが、あれは結構当時は衝撃だった覚えがあります。

小柴名誉教授以来でさらに、３人の日本人が受賞できるとは、ちょっと興奮しますね。

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2008 with one half to

Yoichiro Nambu
   Enrico Fermi Institute, University of Chicago, IL, USA

"for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics"

and the other half jointly to

Makoto Kobayashi, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), Tsukuba, Japan

and

Toshihide Maskawa,Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Kyoto    University, Japan

"for the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the    existence of at least three families of quarks in nature"
